List of names as written Various modes of spelling Authorities for spelling Situation Description remarks
CAMP [nr Cow Castle] Camp David Watson (Snaip) 040.06 Opposite the Cow Castle is a small knowe on the top of which there are still to be seen the remains of an artificial earthwork, which from its appearance and the formation of the ground, has evidently been a place of defence, there is no mention made of it in any of the records and it appears to have been overlooked by the local antiquaries, Mr Watson farmer of Snaip says that he has always thought it was the remains of a camp, and Dr [Doctor] Sommers of Biggar a local antiquary says that he thought this was a camp but had never made any investigation about it. The formation is ovate, and there are distinct traces of what appear to be three ramparts on the West side, two on the South and one on the East and North East.
