026.05 | The Parish Church with its surrounding burying Ground stands in the Centre of the Village a situation exceedingly well Chosen for the population Generally it was rebuilt in 1794 and is ornamented with a spire and Clock It affords 430 sittings all of which are divided among the heritors according to their respective Valuations and again subdivided among the tenants (excepting the seat of the patron) according to the size of their respective farms _ none of the seats are let. Statistical Account of Carstairs Parish The inhabitants of the Village although they have no seat attached to their feus or houses are accommodated with sittings by the farmers the latter not occupying much more than the half of the Church _ there is one Gallery in the Church for the accommodation of Mr Monteiths household _ In like manner with the Village, the Church is remarkable for its cleanliness and thorough repair _ not as is the Case in Parish Churches throughout the Country where the[y] resemble stables or lumber houses more than places of Worship. ____ |
