026.05 | "The Village of Carstairs is a most beautiful and picturesque spot presenting an object which charms the eye from whatever quarter it is approached." X It certainly presents a favourable Contrast to may villages by its cleanliness & from the Circumstance of almost every house having gardens & ornamental plot of Ground before the door __ judging from the area the village Covers it would be supposed to Contain more inhabitants than it does __ the number only amounting to about 450 the majority of the houses are slated and one storey. there are however newly built houses 2 storeys Generally speaking they are all in excellent repair __ in the Centre of the Village and surrounded by large beech trees is a Green which is free to the inhabitants The only place of Worship in the village is the Parish Church there being no dissenting places of worship in the Parish __ there are three Public Houses in the village. __ X Statistical Account of Carstairs Parish |
