Revd. [Reverend] Mr Lamb, Minister W. Denholm Esq. [Esquire] Factor Mr Thos. [Thomas] Braidwood, Schoolmaster Mr Jas. [James] Paterson, Carmichael Mill |
033.09 | A block of whinstone about 3 feet high and 6 inches square resting in a block or roughly cut pedestal of the same kind of stone about 1 foot square and 9 inches above the ground. There is great uncertainty about its origin but is generally thought to be a remnant of Druidical times. This is the opinion of the authorities quoted, except Mr Braidwood who is of opinion that it is a Roman creation, it does not however belong to any order of Architecture "Except the perpendicular stones or crosses, of which mention has already been made, and the remains of a camp or station in the South - west corner of the parish, there are no other antiquities which deserve notice" Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] There are no perpendicular stones or crosses at present in the parish. Those referred to in the Statistical Account having been since removed. |
