033 | A small chalybeate Spring on the farm of Merkland. It appears to be thoroughly impregnated with oxide of iron and is said to be very diuretic and an excellent restorer of appetite, it is also effectual in removing agues stomach complaints and nervous disorders. Having Summer and the beginning of autumn it is much resorted to by persons in the ordinary and humble walks of life. See Stat Acct of Co [Statistical Account of County], published 1845 page 287. In Sinclairs Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] Vol. [volume] 2 P 38 mention is made of this well as follows " There is a mineral spring in the parish called Merkland Well of the chalybeate kind: a very effectual remedy in agues complaints of the stomach and all nervous disorders; but fatal in consumptions. It is exceeding by light very diuretic and an excellent restore of the appetite. Though this accommodation has been always indifferent yet this water was formerly resorted to during the summer months by persons of rank & fortune. Of late years its reputation has rather declined." |
