This is part of the old military [road] which led from Dumfries to [Portpatrick] and was made at the expence [of the public & ] by the aid of the military about [the] year 1764. This line of road [has been] much altered and improved [in] direction so as to avoid the [heights] and shorten its distance.

Tradition [says] it was arched over and had a [small] tower where a watchan or centinel [could] be placed as in the case of the other [ports] of the town of Dumfries, when the [bridge] was built by the Lady [Dervorgilla a] toll was ordered to be collected, which was given to the Grey Friars [Monastery] in the Friars Vennell, nothing of this remains now but the lower part of the [two] peirs to which the gate was attached,
