There are also some business done in other departments of trade, There are also Several nurseries around the burgh & some gardens which partly supply vegetables to the market of Dumfries. The [population] in 1841 appears to be 3230. Maxwelltown was erected into a parish Quoad Sacra in 1834 by authority of [the General] Assembly The burgh is governed by a provost, two Bailies and four Councillors elected annually. [From] its connection with Dumfries it may in a great measure be considered a suburb of the latter town |
