027 | A considerable town erected into a burgh of barony by charter from the Crown in 1810 and named in honour of Mr Maxwell of Nithsdale its superior It is governed by a provost two bailies and four Councillors elected annually It is situated along a Slightly elevated bank of the River Nith and opposite the burgh of Dumfries & nearly equal in length with the latter with which it is connected by two bridges. the old and New Bridge. The old part of the town is irregularly built the Streets crooked and narrow, and the houses of an inferior class, In the new part of the town it is quite different. The houses are generally neat & convenient and the streets run in Straight lines and are Sufficiently broad. The public road from London to Portpatrick passes through it & forms the principal street. The road from London to Glasgow & Edinburgh by Thornhill and Elvanfoot also passes through it. In the burgh is a courthouse for the accommodation of the meetings of the magistrates & justices of Peace of the district. The Sheriffs Court is occasionally held here. below the court house is the Jail (see article). The Streets are lighted with gas but rather indifferently. There are two founderies viz Stakeford Foundry and Parks Buildings Foundry. The Dumfries Town Mills form part of the industry of this place as they are on the Maxwelltown Side of the River. There is a Tannery, A dye house Connected with the latter are some small manufacture of woollen cloth manufactures of ropes are carried on. There are two brew houses. the one a small, establishment. There is an observatory on Corbelly Hill. In the burgh there are two church The one a chapel of Ease or [Continued on page 122] |
