The room is now occupied as a School of Industry where young children are taught the Elementary branches of education such as Reading Writing Sewing Knitting etc by a Governess who receives a salary of 20 pounds per Annum from the Earl of Selkirk and 1d per week from each Scholar of whom there are about 110 in attendance.
The building Stands on the Site of the Grey friars Church pertaining to a convent of the Same Order. Which Church was granted in 1564 by Queen Mary to the Magistrates of the Borough, for a protestant church it having been petitioned for by the General Assembly. It was used as a Church until 1739 when it was Supplanted by another which was occupied as a parochial church until 1838. The aisle only of this church is now left which is used as a School The Church having been entirely Superseded by the present Splendid parochial Church. The above property belongs to the Earl of Selkirk who purchased it from the Borough to prevent its being pulled down.
