050 [Situation] On the N. [North] side of High Street and on the S. [South] side of the town of Kirkcudbright.
A strong Substantial building of the Castellated Style of Architecture erected in 1815 at a cost of from 4000 to 5000 pounds, which was defrayed by the County and burgh of Kirkcudbright, the Gaol is 4 Stories high, with lower apartments Containing 3 cells, a refractory cell, a Bathroom and Warders room. The 2nd floor contains 4 cells, the third 5 cells, and the 4th contains 3 Cells. (Each floor has a passage and is furnished with a water closet) The roof of the above portion is surrounded by parapets and divided in two Compartments which serves as airing grounds for the prisoners. The tower contains two small Cells and a large one, and the Staircase in which is a door by which access is gained to the court house. A Small octagonal tower is Surmounted by a flag Staff, all the roof of the gaol is ashphalted. The gaol is warmed by three Stoves from which Smoke and heat is conducted by Iron pipes through [the] building. There are two enclosed yards in Connection, the governor's quarters being on the Side of one of them. -
