A large ancient fort of an [---] shape, having on its S.E. [South East] and [---] sides the remains of a rampart composed or earth and Stones, It is situated upon the summit of a small Eminence on the farm of Saltflats. It is supposed to be a vitrified fort from the [---] of quantities of vitrified Water that [---] around the eminence on which the fort is situated. The following quoted from Sinclairs Stat. Acct. "Upon the bank of the same river "Urr" on the east side, about 2 miles
"farther up" than Castle Hill of Barcloy "upon the narrow top of a small
"but high, steep, and rocky hill or mount, have lately been discovered
"the vistiges of another work of strength, which, from the scanty re
"-mains of its materials that are to be found, antiquarians suppose
"to have been a vitrified fort. The place is called the Moat of the
"Mark, or Merkland of Barcloy." -
