044 | [Continued] South Side is the following [viz] "Sion which had risen to a g [glory] that did even excel and da [--] the first reformation was now tramp [trampled] under the foot of the destroyer and all h [her] beauty laid in the dust" On the North Side is the following viz. "In testimony of the feelings of the present generation on t [the] 11th. September 1831 about 10,000 persons assembled here and after hearing an excellent sermon preached by the Revd. [Reverend] Jo [John] Osburne from Psalm 74 verse 22nd. Contributed a fund f [for] the erection of this monument to the memory of these Mar [Martyrs] Alexander Murray Esqr. of Broughton having handsomely given [the] ground. --- four of them were carried to their respective b [burying] places. But James Clemet being a stranger wa [was] interred on the spot" |
