A small plantation on the farm of Mayfield consisting of Ash, Oak and Fir, it is situated on the west bank of "Plengap Burn" hence its name.

044 [Situation] About 1¼ Mile North of Culcaigrie Loch
A stone and lime built pyramidical pillar about 18 or 19 feet high having a square base of about 6 feet by 6. It was erected A.D. 1831 to perpetuate the memory of five persons who were shot to death on this spot. On a stone in the East side of it is the following inscription viz. [videlicet] "Sacred to the memory of David Halliday of Mayfield, John Bell of Whiteside, Robert Lennox of Irlandton, Andrew McRobert and James Clemet who suffered martyrdom on this spot A.D. 1685 for their adherence to the covenant and true presbyterian principles by that wicked persecutor Grierson of Lag." On the west side is the following viz. [videlicet]
"Death broke their fetters off then swift they fled"
"From sin and sorrow and by angels led"
"Enter'd the mansion of eternal joy"
"Blest souls your warfare's done praise, Love enjoy"
