A Small deep pool in the Water of Fleet, which has [its] name from a person called Maxwell (Laird of Stroquhan in Dumfriesshire) who was in 1699 drowned here, under the following Circumstances, he had been on a Visit to a Gentleman called Brown a resident in Bushy Bield near Anwoth, for whose [daughter] Jane Brown, Maxwell was said to entertain an Attachment, but being unsucessful in his address to the young Lady, & On the [?] Same day, it is said he left Bushy Bield [abruptly] & was drowned in the Water of Fleet in the pool which has been ever since called Stroquhan's Pool, in Commemoration of the Mournful Accident. |
