023.11 | "In 1840 a handsome School and School house was erected in Luthermuir by the liberality of Sir J.S. Forbes Bart [Baronet], and by Subscriptions from the heritors and others, which is endowed by the Society for the Propagation of Christian Knowledge, with a salary of £15 Per annum, besides which the teacher has about 3 acres of land rent free from Sir J.S. Forbes. It is attended by about 60 Scholars, and the average amount of fees may be about £22 yearly." (New, Stat. Act. [Statistical Account]). The Schoolmaster has the Government allowance, with Certificate etc. and the School is visited by the Government Inspectors. Poor Scholars are educated free. All the rudimentary branches are taught, but according to the Charter preference is to be given to Scripture reading and religious instruction.
