| Laurencekirk (Continued) | [continued from page 1] "of an old earthen fence known by the name of the Rae or Deer Dike of which many traces are still visible, and which probably enclosed the forest of Garvock." (New Stat: Act: [New Statistical Account]) "Laurencekirk, the present name of the parish, was assumed from the old Kirk of Conveth having been dedicated to St Laurence. Conveth, according to Skene, means "duty paid to an Ecclesiastical Superior." (Land of the Lindsays.) "Stonehaven is the chief seat of the Sheriff Courts of the Mearns. Inverbervy is the only Royal Burgh in the Shire, and the towns of Stonehaven, Laurencekirk, Fettercairn, and Auchinblae, are the larger places." (Memoirs of Angus & Mearns) "Conveth. A duty formerly paid in Scotland, to the Superior or Ecclesastical Superior. Apparently from Lat: [Latin] Convictus, Signifying ordinary food, meat, and drink, &c. especially as intended for those who lived in Society; from Con and Vivo." (Jamieson) The only object or place in the Parish which retains the ancient name, is the Small Estate, and Mill of Conveth, the property of Alexander Crombie Esqr of Thornton House. |
