Roman Camp | [Roman Camp continued] | [continued from page 144] 3 * The Spear referred to is still in possession of Mr Carnegie it is of Bronze. This has more the appearance of having formed the Tip of a Banner or Flag Staff, than being used as a Spear. 4/6/63 "I may mention that I have a Roman Spear which was found in the Camp. It is of beautiful workmanship and of the hardest steel. The old man who gave it to me, whose Father found it, stated that when found it was inserted in a long Oaken Shaft which crumbled to pieces, and had a band, or ring of iron round the Shaft with the word "Agricola" upon it, which was lost." (Revd [Reverend] C. Buchan D.D. [Doctor of Divinity] Fordoun 4th June 1863) "Near Fordoun house is part of a camp or Roman Station, it is about 90 yards long by 50 wide. Of this Camp nothing now remains except the Praetorium, but in the younger days of the present clergyman, he found old people who could trace to him a considerable part of the outlines of the Camp, which were most extensive, and had been defended by triangular forts, at the different corners, by outposts, and by a deep morass at the lower extremity. It was capable of containing a large army. The outposts have now been levelled, and the morass has been turned into a dry and very productive field. In trenching that morass the heads of several Roman Spears were found, one of which is now in possession of *John Carnegie Esqr, Redhall. A gold ring similar to what we are told the Roman Knights wore, was also found, and a number of bones have been dug up in various places near and at a greater distance from the camp. part of these were enclosed in rough unhewn stone Chests, and fell to dust when they were exposed to the air, - part of them buried underneath Cairns, and several were laid in the open fields, and were accidentally turned [continued on page 146] |
