Roman Camp [Roman Camp continued] [Continued from page 145] up by the plough. In those urns which were found entire, there were generally a considerable quantity of calcined or half burnt bones. The urns themselves were of clay, of very rough manufacture, but retaining the marks of the strings with which they had been bound round, probably when forming. Means have now been adopted by the noble proprietor to preserve this Roman Camp from being farther encroached upon by the plough. (New. Stat. Act P. [New Statistical Account Pages] 85-6
All that can now be traced of the Roman Camp referred to by the above extracts is the Small oblong Shewn on Southeast corner of Trace 4 Plan 20/6. It is on a good state of preservation and the rampart and ditch very complete, also the gate on the west side. The Camp is planted all over, and when being planted the Spear referred to by Dr [Doctor] Buchan was found near the centre of the Camp. The Bronze article in possession of Mr Carnegie was found outsidethe Camp. Up to the present time I have not met with any person who can point out the place where the Gold ring and Urns referred to were found. Mr James Annandale Hd [Head] Gardiner and Factor at Monboddo House for the last 40 years states that he remembers the Morass being drained but does not remember of anything being found except the Spears and a Medal, he does not know the exact place where the Medal was found nor what became of it.
