020.05 | " St Palladius' Chapel is a building of great antiquity it measures 43 feet 5 inches in length 23 feet 1 inch in breadth and 22 feet 4 inches high in the east-end, one storey slated; and in good repair: It was near here where St Palladius was buried it is said, in a silver shrine; but afterwards, his body was removed from its resting place in the immediate proximity of the well, and the present ancient edifice called St Palladius's Chapel built over his remains in 452. He came to Fordoun in 432 having been sent over from Rome by Pope Celestine, to appose [oppose] the Pelagian Heresy in that year , and died at Fordoun in 452. The Chapel, in question is one of the oldest ecclesiastical edifices, in Britian; as will be seen from its date; and like the Well, it was a place of pilgrimage for all classes of the People. It was after visiting the shrine of St Palladius, in this Chapel, that King Kenneth III was murdered by Fenella or Finella, and his body brought back to Fordoun, where it was interred. In 1524 the Archbishop of St Andrews ordered the remains of St Palladius, then reposing in this Chapel, to be reenclosed in a Silver shrine and readorned with precious Stones. The building itself bears the marks of remote antiquity; having no particular Style of Architecture. In the east end of the Chapel, there is still the arch where x over [continued on page 130] |
