053 This name applies to one of the principal islands which comprise that group known as the "Outer Hebrides", it's greatest length is about twenty-one, miles, and has an average breadth of about eight miles, There is a belt on the west side of this island about two miles in breadth which is very flat, and thickly studded with fresh water lochs, The east coast is bold & rocky, particularly to the south of "Loch Skiport", The principal headlands on the west side are Rudh' Àrd-mhìcheil and Rudha Ardvula and on the east side Usinish on which point stands the light House, The Coast on the east side is indented by loch's "Carnan", "Shealavag", "Skiport", "Eynort", & "Boisdale", Steamers from Glasgow call regularly at "Loch Boisdale", & "Loch Carnan", Loch Skiport is a fine harbour of refuge, and much resorted to, The soil, with the exception of the belt already alluded to on west side is Moorland, A Continuous range of hills extending from Loch Skiport near north end, to the Island of "Eriskay", on the South, This range is interrupted only by Loch's "Eynort", & "Boisdale", There are six Churches on the island, Three Roman Catholic, Two, of the Established Church of Scotland, and one belonging to the Free Church body, There are three Schools, Two, under Schoolboard Supervision, and one under the Control, & management of the Free Church party, There also three public houses, one at "Carnan", north end, one at "Polachar", South end, and one, at "Lochboisdale", The Antiquities of the island are numerous, and consist of, first, old Chapels remains, & Sites of,
