037 | This name applies to a small island on which is situated the lighthouse known as "Monach", in the Anglicised form, this name is known as "Shillay", and the name "Monach" is applicable to the whole group consisting of six great and smnall, although each has a distinct name of its own, property of Sir John Orde. It belongs to the parish of North Uist. Shillay is supposed to have been the only Island of the Group known as "Monach (= Monk) Island" there having been one time on it a Monastery, or supposed to be such, all traces of which have disappeared. All the islands of the group were, and still are by many of the people of the Islands & district, called "Heisker". But there being an Island called "Haskeir" some 12 or 14 miles to the north of this group, the name Monach Islands has gradually come into use as more easily distinguished from the other Island Haskeir than the name Heisker is. |
