SOUTH HARRIS South Harris Mr K. McDonald, Factor Borve, Harris 018 This name applies to the southern division of the parish of Harris, that is, from the narrow isthmus at Tarbert, the road between East Loch Tarbert & west Loch Tarbert being the boundary.
The east side of this portion of Harris is thickly inhabited by small tenant, who are living in very wretched houses, and make a living (in some cases very poor) between fishing & cultivating small patches of the land and grazing sheep & cattle. The ground along the whole of this side, i.e [that is] from Rodel to Tarbert is very inferior, affording very poor & scanty pasture, is very rocky, bumpy and almost covered with small lochs.
There are very few people on the west side although the land
