012 This name is applied to an eminence 640 yards in length by 330 in breadth, situated a little eastward of the town. We are told by tradition that in the sixth century Inverness was the Capital of the Pictish Kingdom and that the Royal Palace stood on the rising ground now called the Crown, for what reason unless from this circumstance or some fancied resemblance to that ensign of Royalty, is now uncertain.
