045 [Situation] In the west end of the parish
This Cave was discovered in a field on the farm of West Grange of Connan during the process of ploughing last spring, and is consi- [considered] by all competent judges who saw it to have been an ancient subterraneous dwelling and of of the same description of artificial usually called Picts Houses. The following extract from the Telegraph of June 4th. 1859 a Dundee News paper will convey an idea of what it is.
" Archaeological Discovery. A discovery of intense interest to antiquarians has just been made on the farm of West Grange of Connan (Mr. Lindsays) on the estate of that name belonging to Dr. [Doctor] Crichton of Dundee. In the centre of a nearly sown field of barley on a rising ground of about 550 feet above the level of the sea we came on a small opening of a triangular form which with difficulty admitted us when we found ourselves in the centre of one of those ancient bee-hived formed places generally ascribed to Pictish origin of which we have no cause to doubt. The place is built without cement of any kind of unhewn and split boulders with blocks of old red sandstone. + + + + + + + +
