The name was anciently Menmure and Menmore the last syllable of which is well known to be a common termination to names of places in this Kingdom, such as Strathmore, the great valley, Kenmore the great head and Beumore the great hill"

The parish is bounded on the north by the parish of Lethnot & Navar; on the north-west by a small portion of commonty land; on the West by the parish of Fearn; on the south by the parishes of Careston and Brechin and on the East by the parish of Stracathro.
