054 | [Situation] On the east side of Brown Street These schools are in connection with the Free church. They are supported by voluntary contributions and by the school fees. There is also the usual allowance to pupil teacher & master from the Committee of Privy Council on education. About 150 pupils attend the boys school and about 90 that of the girls. The branches taught are reading, writing, English grammar, Geography, music Bookkeeping History, Drawing and Bible history. Besides sewing & knitting are taught the girls. The master's salary is £110 a year. The salary of the mistress is variable from £36 to £45 a year. The schools are divided into two departments, the boys' department (being the ground floor) designated the "Brown Street Juvenile School" and that of the girls the "Brown Street Industrial School". The girls school is in the second or upper storey |
