Corporal Keely Ordnance Survey
Milton Carmylie
Arbroath 6 July 1858

Dear Sir,
On my return from the country
I found your favor of 2d Inst. [Instant] and [new
salyour] copy of my notes regarding the
Chapel of the "Blessed Virgin of Kermylie"
I never was at Carnegie, but believe
that there is a tradition that a castle stood
there. Two writs in the Brechin Cartulary of the
year 1450, mention John Carnegy of that ilk among
other landed Proprietors in Angus, and James Carnegy
of that ilk is a witness to David Strachan's founda
tion Charter of the Chapel of Carmylie.
The last erection called a Castle
may have been built as you suppose after
1350.
