A small village situated on the sea coast of the Firth of Forth, the houses of which are from one to three stories high, in good repair and occupied by mechanics &c. It contains a U.P. [United Presbyterian] Church two public houses and a school &c. This village is the birthplace of Alexander Selkirk (Robinson Crusoe) and the house in which he was born is still pointed out. A descendant of one of his brothers is in possession of his gun sea-chest and drinking-cup which he had with him on the island.
