009 | [situation] In the Eastern portion of the Parish of Auchtermuchty. A small town consisting of two [crossing] principal streets, and a number of small streets and detached rows of houses branching off them in different directions. and in every part the buildings are laid off without any [right] to regularity. the houses are generally from one to three storys high. mostly all in good repair and having slated - tiled - and thatched roofs. in nearly equal proportions the streets are unpaved and are in general [obscured] repair the town is lighted with gas. and was erected into a Royal Burgh by a Charter granted by James VI [6th] of Scotland and is governed by a Provost two baillies and 9 councillors. the property consists of a Common, of the annual value of about £ [obscured] there are three annual fairs and a weekly Corn Market held [at] it. There is a Town Hall three Banks five Churches four Schools [and a ] Post Office in it. with two Inns. with a number of [cloth] grocers and Public houses. but the chief trade carried on in the Town is [Weaving] |
