[situation] On the South side of Kirkgate, at the West end of the Parish Church. A Strong Substantial Stone building about 30 links Square at the base and about 70 links high it is Surmounted by an Octagonal Spire which with with the Tower is in all about 106 feet high. both these conjointly are a part of the Old, or former Parish Church, and Still Standing and in good repair are used as part of the present Parish Church. the given authorities cannot say anythging of the date of there erection, in the Statistical Hist. of Co. [History of the County] it is stated that they were built "in the year 1415 by the prior of St. Andrews." this Tower, Spire and Session House is all that now remains of that former Church or buildings. |
