It was a part of the fortifications by which the town was formerly Surrounded. it was constructed as a means of in - and - egress; to the Town. its site only now remains.

It [consisted] of two gates situated at the extreme ends of the South Bridge both gates being Situated at both sides of the water and were a part of the fortifications by which the Town was Surrounded having been constructed as a means of in - and egress to the Town.
