PARISH OF WHITTINGHAM 011 Description of the parish of Whittingham Continued –
The village of Whittingham which Consists only of the parish Church and School. The Manse, schools residence and a few working mens houses. Stands on an eminence [about] 350 feet above the level of the sea overlooking Whittinghame Water, and surrounded by many natural beauties, from here an extensive view can be [obtained] of the surrounding Country, the Firth of Forth and they Coast of Fifeshire. Whittingham Castle the place in [which] Darnley's murder was Concocted by Morton and his associates, is still in good repair and though showing [many] of great antiquity has been lately renovated and Continues to be inhabited. The principal modern [residence] in the parish is Whittingham House. It is a beautiful structure in the Grecian style of architecture and has three elegant approaches, Two of them are of great lenght, winding through very fine scenery. The Earls of March held their baronial Courts here, Stoneypath Tower [note above 'see Plan II.C.'], which was erected by the haughty and once powerful Douglases is in this parish, a considerable part of its lofty walls are still standing, and old encampment on Priesthill in the Lammermuir district. The Camp is quite entire, it consists of four ditches the Circumference of which measures about 670 yards – (See opposite Side)-
