006 [Situation] At the N. [North] side of the Victoria Harbour,
This interesting ruin stands at the northern extremity and presents a peculiarly bold appearance, in the feudal lines it was deemed impregnable, and withstood many sieges, the time of its erection cannot be ascertained but it had been ascribed to the Picts a race of the ancient Caledonians at an early period when they established one of their strongholds in the Lothians.
It is built of red sand stone similar to that still found in the neighbouring quarries. (turn over)
