002 [Situation] About 10 Chains West from N, Bewk [North Berwick] Abbey
The ruins of the Abbey of North Berwick. It was erected and richly endowed by Duncan Earl of Fife, and from the existing remains, must have been a large and magnificent structure. It is now sadly dilapidated, but a few traces of its former grandeur still remain. This ruin stands a little west of the town of North Berwick.

[Note] -- here [initialled] [PB]

[Note] -- There is only a small part of the
ruins at present remaining Probably
the refectory. The walls are standing their
original height with the chimneys perfect
and the lower storey still perfect, the
groined arches of the cells or apartments
in good preservations. But from what
could be learned in the locality the
ruin now remaining was but a small
part of the building of the Convent
therefore "Remains of" not "Ruins of" is the
proper term to be written on plan.

Also Abbey or Nunnery, is written on plan in preference to Abbey, only which, latter, appears to be the popular
term applied to this established in the locality & even by writers. But as Abbey appears not to be a usual designation for a nunnery
& particularly one governed by a prioress as this always was It is therefore better to retain the two terms viz. the popular one & that which particularly designates the establishment.
