012 A small village consisting of houses of one & two Storeys and in general good repair occupied chiefly by farm Labours there is one Small Public House "with no name" a Post Office Parish Church Free Church also a Parish & private School and two small retail grocers Shops it is said in this Village that when Cromwell invaded Scotland that he passed through this place and remained a short time in a house at the East end of the Village which still bears his name at the West end of the Village is the site of a castle which at one time belonged to the Hepburn Family relations of the infamous Bothwell the celebrated Broadwood Pianoforte Maker of London was born in this Village the principal proprietor is Capt. [Captain] Hunter, Thurston
