HAREHEAD CASTLE (Site of) Harehead Castle (site of) Mr. George Dods Farmer Harehead
David Denholm Farmer Middle Monynut
021 In the Stackyard of Harehead farm there is the site of Harehead Castle, once the residence of the Earls of Hyndford. Mr. George Dods, the present occupier of the farm related to me a tradition he heard from his uncle who was tenant on the farm about a hundred years ago; he commenced saying, My Uncle told me the Harehead Castle was an antiquity about a hundred years ago and the Earl of that time set great treasure on it. it was burnt down about this time and my Uncle went immediately and informed the Earl of the catastrophe (it is supposed that then the Earl lived at the present residence of Sir G.G. Suttie). As soon as he heard the news he ordered him off his property and told him he did it on purpose, and through that means he would let his farm to another. I have given all the information I heard in the locality and there is no mention made of it ever being a place of strength.
