025 | "Among the principal discoveries of recent years at Auchindavy have been various fragments of Roman Pottery - a deep hollow containing charcoal and ashes - a deposit of stone bullets about the size of a 24 pound shot, lying many feet under the surface; and a Well of excellent water, surrounded with masonry, and covered by a stone slab, over which the soil had accumulated to a considerable depth. All these were found within what was the area of the Station; the stone bullets had no doubt been at one time deposited beside some of the projectile engines which had stood upon the platform of the Rampart; and the Well is, we should say, unquestionably that which supplied the ancient Garrison." Caledonia Romana This Well is Known generally as a Roman Well, & it is remarKable for having a small narrow drain flowing into it from the Fort of Auchindavy, within which the well is situated on the top of the present form of the ditch of the great or Roman Wall. The drain which is said to be Roman has never been explored. The depth of the Well is not more than an ordinary one being 6 feet or thereabouts in depth. The place where the Stone bullets were found is between the remains of one side of the Fort & the office house in which the stone having the Roman figure upon it stands. But the proper or exact place is not Known. |
