056 [Situation] About 2 miles NWW, [North West West] from Ruthwell Village.
A dwelling house with garden, barns and a farm of land attached - the property of the Earl of Mansfield.
Slethat - probably a corruption of Sloethwaite.
Mr Dickson who resided here upwards of 50 years ago informs me that at that period the greater part of the land adjoining was covered with brushwood in which the Sloe bush predominated. He is consequently of opinion that this name should be written Slaethat (Scotch) abounding with the Sloe even though contrary to local usage of the period. [initialled] MJ.
