052; 053; 058; 059 | At the S.En [South Eastern] extremity of the County of Dumfries. The Name is derived from the circumstance of the existing Parish comprehending only one half of the original one of Morton, - the other half havingbeen annexed to Canonbie at the commencement of the 17th Century. The Parish of Half Morton is bounded on the North by those of Middlebie and Langholm, on the East by Cannonbie and Cumberlandshire, on the South by Gretna and Kirkpatrick-Fleming and on the West by Kirkpatrick-Fleming and Middlebie. There is no detached part of Half Morton within the boundaries of another Parish nor is there within the limits above assigned to it a detached portion of any other Parish but it is joined quoad Sacra to Langholm and consequently termed a quoad civilia Parish. Its greatest length is 5 miles and its greatest breadth 3 1/2 miles. It is an oblong stretching from North to South but having an indentation at its Southern extremity. Its entire area has now been computed at about 6300 acres. The district as a whole may be considered arable, the only exceptions being at the northern and South-western districts where small portions of the land are respectively hilly and boggy.
