CAMP [W of Bogrie] Camp Mr Joseph Barton
Mr William Barton
039 [Situation] About 3 miles N.W. by W. [North West by West] of Dunscore Village
The remains of a small camp, which had probably been used as an outpost of a much larger one situated lower down, as, from its position, it is much better adapted to overlook the Surrounding hills. * This, no doubt, has been a Camp or Fort of Some Sort, it is too rude in its Construction to be of Roman Workmanship, and too insignificant to be used by them as a place of Strength, probably, may be Pictish or Danish.
+There have been no Roman Antiquities ever found in this neighbourhood, being the Roman Road traversed the opposite side of the Nith.- It is therefore most improbable that this is a Roman Camp - intercepted as the Romans would thus be in their Communication with the Road by a deep and rapid river.
