[East] Corner of St. Michaels Church - Graveyard A neat And handsome Mausoleum over Some of the Mortal remains of the Poet Burns, erected in 1815, At a cost of £1450 depayed by public Subscription, Sanctified by a Contribution of 50 Guineas from george IV And was Constructed according to a design furnished by Thomas F. Hunt Esqr. of London . In the interior is a fine emblemat marble structure, designed by Peter Turnerelli which represents the Genius of Scotland investing Burns-in his rustic dress and employment - with her poetic Mantle - Yhe body of the bard was originally interred in the Northern Corner of the Churchyard And honoured with only a plain Monument Stone erected by his widow but was on the 19th. Sptr. [September] 1815 transferred to an Arched Vault in the present Mausoleum .- |
