055 [Situation] In the Centre of High Street , at the S. [South] Corner of Queensberry Square.
The Mid Steeple where the principal building, Consists of a Square tower surmounted by a sort of Cupola - in the tower or steeple is the Town bell and Town Clock, the latter illuminated by Gas during the night . This building is about 80or 90 feet high And Stands in the middle of an oblong building. On the South Side of the mid Steeple is a building 3 Storeys high, the lower Storey occupied by Shops partly, Also a lockup for offenders In the middle Storey is the Council Chambers which is Ascended by a flight of Stairs And entering the Council Chamber by a portice or vestibule on the front of the building is Cut in Stone the Royal Arms of Scotland as the Arms of the Burgh,- in this room the Burgh Magistrates hold their Bench or Court, Also the Town Council meet on occasions- the upper Storey is occupied As the dwelling of the Superintendant of the Police.- On the North Side of the Steeple, building is Continued but only two Storeys high - in it there is a Small room used As the Police Office. the remainder occupied As Shops. The Mid Steeple was built in 1706 to serve as a belfry for the Town A Also for the Town ClocK . The Council Chamber was built at the Same time for a Court House. - The Mid- Steeple is the principal building.-
