Plan 61.9 Trace 2.

this castle according to Camden in his annals in the month of Aug 1570 was Ruined by the Earl of Sussex who was sent with an English Army to Support King James, V1. after the Murder of the Regent, also in his Britannica in 1607 calls it a weak house of the Barons of Maxwell, whence it is probable that only the fortifications of this castle were demolished by Sussex. It was repaired in 1638 as mentioned by some authors and taken in 1651 by Cromwell here the dates are different because no two authorities in writing agree *
The castle is surrounded by a wet ditch of considerable Magnitude. Car or Carr which signifies wet land and laverock a lark are the Correct components of the present orthograph and the place about is descriptive of car being wetish, "Caer" although used in many names seems not to be genuine, although Tacitus says ,caer,, is in fact: Vide Tacitus.
N. Downshire

[below, in another hand, is written] -- and so it is - and genuine too
