generally the 3 principal fortresses of the Kingdom, Edinburgh, Stirling and Dumbarton. James V1
was occasionally brought to live here during his boyhood, though his more frequent residence was the
royal castle of Stirling. The last heir of the Scottish Monarchy, who was brought up here, was Henry
Prince of Wales, eldest son of James V1. who died in his 18th year. Queen Mary spent some of her infant
years in Alloa Tower; and here, in after life, she passed two nights, when reconciled to Lord Darnley, in
July 1566. The very celebrated George Buchanan, the boast of Scotland, is believed to have resided for a
considerable time in Alloa Tower, when superintending the education of the young prince"
