Site of ST TROSTAN'S CHAPEL | Trostan or St. Trostan | D. Henderson Esquire Mr Gunn Dale John Macleod Westerdale |
022 | This name applies to the site of an old Chapel, and grave yard. The grave yard is still to be seen, situated in the middle of an arable field, north of Westerdale. It is not in any way enclosed nor is there any Tombstones in it. The last person buried here was an old woman, in 1864. In the grave made for this woman was found, a stone coffin containing human remains, about 4 feet from the surface, it was composed of large flags, all except the ends, which were built with small stones. Mr Henderson was present when the grave was opened and saw the human remains but as they had got to the place with the remains of the woman, before he had time to examine it minutely, it was covered up again, and the new coffin laid on the top of it, thus leaving the latter, only 2 feet from the surface.
