022 A large and commodious house, built, - upwards upwards of two hundred years ago, and stands on the remains of a Pictish house. Local tradition says - there was only three carts in caithness when this house was built, and that all the stone, Wood, &c. was carried either by men or on horse back. It is still in very good repair, and is far superior in size and appearance to any other house in this part of the Parish. Garden attached The property of Sir P Thriepland of Fingask. There was a battle fought at this place, about the middle of the 10th century between two Brothers Liot, and Skuli, who contended for the Earldom of Orkney and Caithness. Skuli was defeated and slain, and Liot seized the whole of Caithness. No one can tell, where this was, and there is nothing left to mark the place. Proprietor - Sir P. Triepland of Fingask.

site of this battle. Torfaeus mentions it and
affirms that it took place in Watten Parish, and
local tradition confirms his statement.
