WESTRUTHER [Parish] | Westruther | Continued [from page 1] The southern district consists of a broad vale, along the base of the uplands, a narrower vale along the Southern border, and an intermediate ridgy swell; and has a well cultivated, pleasant, & warm appearance Between 800 & 900 acres are wooded, & about 11,000 are either regularly or occasionally under the Plough. The Streams which drain the parish are chiefly three, which run on the boundaries - one of them a head Stream of the Blackadder, & the other two confluent tributaries of the Leader. The mansion of Spottiswoode, Situated on the West, & the seat of the principal landower is partly a new house, not long finished & built on the old English Style, with an encincturing and an Architecturally ornamented terrace, & partly the old family residence repaired, altered, & worked into proximate harmony of Character with the old edifice. Bassendean house in the South, & the Seat of Colonel Home is a neatly modernized plain old building, in the midst of tastefully embellished grounds. [Continued on page 3] |
