[continued from page 50] from preceeding page. Lord Badenoch two sons; Sir Reginald who in 1267 was Lord Chamberlain of Scotland; Henry Cheyne his brother was elected Bishop of Aberdeen 1281. The direct male line of the Cheynes of Inverugie failed in the reign of David 2nd and the parish of St Fergus with the other estates fell to two heiresses the eldest of whom Mariotha Cheyne, married John Keith of Ravenscraig, second son of Sir Edward Keith, great Marischal of Scotland, who in her right became proprietor of this parish about the year 1360. The direct male line of John Keith failed in the person of Sir Williams Keith of Inverugie who fell in the battle of Flowden. He left two daughters the eldest of whom married to William 4th Earl Marischal sometime before 1538. By this marriage Earl Marischal became proprietor of St Fergus. This noble Lord died in 1581 and was succeeded by his grandson George the 5th Earl Marischal one of the most eminent men of his time. In 1593 he made a noble foundation of a college at Aberdeen.
"Inverugie Castle which according to historians was founded by Sir John de Keith about the year 1380 who had received the lands of Inverugie as a marriage portion with his wife Mariot Cheyne from other accounts it appears that part of it had been erected at a much earlier period. That portion of the structure denominated Cheyne's Tower was probably built by the family of that name but at what particular period cannot now be ascertained. The greater part of the present fabric is supposed to have been erected about the close of the 16 century by George Earl Marischal the founder of Marischal College Aberdeen.
