041, 047 A Stream which takes its rise from Surface water adjacent to the east base of Benwhat near the Source of the Coil, Ph. [Parish] of Dalmellington. The first two miles of its Course is the boundary between the Phs. [Parishes] of Cumnock & Ochiltree. The name is descriptive, and, no doubt, is derived from the blackish & muddy appearance of the water. Not rapid - flowing through a back Country - banks low. The name (Black Water) is applicable only from its source to its junction with Blue Boots Lane, which occurs about ¼ mile north of Burnockhead. From this place to the village of Ochiltree where it falls into the Lugar, it is Called and well Known by the Burnock.
