041, 047 A Stream which takes its rise from Surface water adjacent to the east base of Benwhat near the Source of the Coil, Ph. [Parish] of Dalmellington. The first two miles of its Course is the boundary between the Phs. [Parishes] of Cumnock & Ochiltree. The name is descriptive, and, no doubt, is derived from the blackish & muddy appearance of the water. Not rapid - flowing through a back Country - banks low. The name (Black Water) is applicable only from its source to its junction with Blue Boots Lane, which occurs about ΒΌ mile north of Burnockhead. From this place to the village of Ochiltree where it falls into the Lugar, it is Called and well Known by the Burnock.
